Develop Personal Resilience in the Workplace
This one-day highly interactive programme aims at highlighting the critical need to build resiliency in our workplace. The recent pandemic has again revealed the unpredictability and the changes we face constantly. Anxiety and depression are common today. Therefore, it is increasingly important in helping officers to handle the demands of the rapidly changing environment and workplace. According to Kaplan (1999), resilience refers to the capacity of an individual to cope with stress, overcome adversity or adapt positively to change. It involves behaviours, thoughts, and actions. It is estimated that up to 90% of us will experience at least one serious traumatic event during our lives. Traumatic events throw our lives into turmoil in unpredictable ways; no two people will respond to them in the same manner. For some, the stress of the event will become chronic, lasting for years. However, many will find ways to meet the challenge and continue with purposeful lives. For a period after their ordeal, they may become distressed, but in time they will bounce back and carry on. This is resilience. Some survivors will even grow stronger and wiser because of their trauma. The resilient ones often report that their hardship has helped them to appreciate life more, to become closer to family and friends, to find greater meaning in life, and to embark on a refreshed sense of mission at work. And wonderfully, research has shown that resilience can be developed and enhanced to promote greater well-being.
